Wine Production Process

Wine is primarily made from fermented grapes, though other fruits can also be used. The process can vary slightly depending on the type of wine (red, white, sparkling, etc.), but generally follows these steps:

1. Harvesting: Grapes are picked at optimal ripeness, which can vary depending on the wine style and grape variety. They can be harvested by hand or machine.

2. Crushing and Pressing:

  • For red wines, the grapes are crushed, and the skins are left in the fermentation process to provide color, tannins, and flavour.
  • For white wines, the grapes are typically pressed immediately to separate the juice from the skins, producing a lighter color and flavour profile.

3. Fermentation: The grape juice is transferred to fermentation vessels, and yeast is added to convert sugars into alcohol. For red wine, fermentation takes place with the skins, while white wines are fermented without them.

4. Aging: Once fermentation is complete, the wine may be aged in stainless steel tanks, concrete, or oak barrels. Oak aging imparts additional flavours, such as vanilla, spice, or toast, while stainless steel retains more of the wine’s fresh, fruity characteristics.

5. Clarification: The wine is clarified to remove any remaining solids, such as yeast or grape skins. Fining agents, filtration, or settling processes are used to achieve clarity.

6. Bottling: After aging and clarification, the wine is bottled. Some wines are bottled directly after fermentation, while others may be aged in the bottle for further development before being sold.
