Take the tasting experince survey

Gin is a versatile spirit primarily made by distilling grain alcohol (such as barley or wheat) and infusing it with botanicals, the most essential being juniper berries. The distillation process usually begins with a neutral grain spirit, which is then redistilled with various botanicals like coriander, citrus peel, and spices to create the desired flavours. Methods such as steeping or vapor infusion extract these botanical oils. The production of gin, which can be distilled or compounded, traces its roots back to Europe, particularly the UK, where it has been a popular spirit since the 17th century

Origin:

Inverroche Distillery is located in the coastal town of Still Bay, in the Western Cape of South Africa. It was founded in 2007 by Lorna Scott, a pioneer in South Africa’s craft gin movement. The distillery’s name is a combination of “Inver,” a Scottish Gaelic word meaning “meeting of the waters,” and “Roche,” French for “rock,” referencing the landscape around Still Bay where rivers meet the sea and are bordered by rocky outcrops.

Unique Features:

Inverroche is famous for its use of fynbos, the rich plant life indigenous to South Africa’s Cape Floral Kingdom. Each gin is infused with a different range of fynbos botanicals, giving the gins a unique, terroir-driven flavour profile. Their Amber Gin is particularly special because it uses late-harvested botanicals, giving it a rich, almost earthy character with a distinctive amber hue.

Origin:

Cape Saint Blaize Gin is distilled in Mossel Bay, South Africa, at the edge of the Indian Ocean. The distillery is named after the iconic Cape St. Blaize lighthouse, which has been guiding ships safely along the rugged coastline since 1864. The lighthouse, perched on a cliff, is a symbol of exploration and discovery, aligning with the brand’s innovative approach to gin production.

Unique Features:

Cape Saint Blaize uses botanicals that reflect the unique biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Rooibos and buchu are just a couple of the South African plants that are included in their gin recipes. Their Florist Gin is particularly floral, featuring botanicals such as green rooibos and mint buchu, giving it a refreshing and aromatic profile. The distillery’s bottles are also noteworthy, as they are cast using a custom mould and fired at over 1000°C, resulting in a unique, hand-crafted finish.

Origin:

Six Dogs Distillery is based in the scenic De Wet Valley of the Western Cape, South Africa. It was founded by Charles Bryant and his two friends, Glenn Bryant and Luigi Marucchi. The name “Six Dogs” pays tribute to the six dogs owned by Charles on the family farm, who were ever-present during the distillation process.

Unique Features:

Six Dogs is known for pushing the boundaries of gin production, using unique ingredients such as Karoo succulents, blue pea flowers, and locally sourced honey and lime. Their Honey and Lime Gin, for instance, features raw honey harvested from their farm, which brings a subtle sweetness to the spirit. Each gin is hand-crafted in small batches, focusing on quality and creativity.
